Hello! I'm never sure how to start these because I am really NOT a writer, but let me just say how happy I am that you are here! You're amazing, and it is so great that you are taking a deeper look into what you put on your body! I hope I can help guide you in the right direction and make it clear why I use the products I do.
It is a Friday evening where I am right now... How else should I spend my night if not drinking a raw milk hot chocolate and further researching the ingredients in my own products!
If you're new here, I'm happy to see your face. We like faces here... Like a lot. My goal is to nourish your face and help it do what it is supposed to do! With that being said, lets get right into this.
I'm going to discuss more in-depth how The Butter came to be and why the skincare angels are WITH us!
When dreaming up Schoon it all started with The Butter. I was a new mom of a one year old and expecting my second any day when I was panic buying any natural product I could find on the market for my babies. My naivete at the time was very endearing but I am grateful it has passed in this regard. I ordered a few different "bum butters" and "booty balms", call them what you will, but you get the idea. I had gone on a rampage of research and found out every product I was using for my babies had hormone disruptors, skin irritators, and highly inflammatory ingredients. After receiving my new natural products in the mail, I was only just kind-of-pleased with their texture and effect. I never did any research on the ingredients, I just wanted to give it an objective try first.
After the many disappointments based primarily in texture and effect, I was at a loss... UNTIL, I was out for a walk with my toddler and newborn. We stopped by our favourite shop downtown which sold all sorts of natural products. I saw a little jar of shea butter sitting there on the shelf and thought I'd pick it up. I started using the shea butter on myself and I liked it but I still found it a little too... Slippery. That is where the adventuare REALLY began.
So I set off to see what I could find. As a child I used to love to take half empty bottles of conditioner, lotion, shampoo and body wash and make "potions". Little did I know it would be the prerequisite to m career formulating my own skincare products.
I started with very rudimentary reading about the ingredients. Finding articles about different butters and oils and waxes and their long-standing, traditional uses. That's when I came across mango butter. People said they liked the texture of mango butter, so it was my top consideration. Next was the kokum butter, where I again did a quick google search to find that it had some promising qualities. Then Jojoba, in my opinion, a VERY interesting ingredient is actually made of 98% wax esters. Then finally, camellia (tea) seed oil, used in eastern culture for centuries for skincare and cooking alike is revered for its absorbability.
If you're still with me, you're my people! Thanks for sticking around to listen to me geek out about plant butters.
After coming up with the final formulation for The Butter and finding nearly INSTANT results I could not wait to get it into people's hands. The launch came and people LOVED it. People still love The Butter as it is our top selling products. That's when the wheels started to really turn in my head... WHY? Like, I get it... I like it too, but why?! So I did a little digging and here is what I have found:
First, tried and true for ages is shea butter. It is used in so many cosmetics around the world and it makes sense why. Shea butter is high in triterpenes, tocopherol, phenols, and sterols all of which are highly ant-inflammatory and antioxidant which means it can help heal scars, signs of ageing, sun damage etc. Aside from this it's rich profile of saturated fatty acids (SFA) and its negligible amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) make it the perfect ingredient to use for nourishing skincare. It is also high in cinnamic acid which is known to protect skin from harmful UV rays.
Next we have mango butter. Mango butter ended up being a hidden gem, while most of its composition is very similar to shea butter, it contains a plyphenol called mangiferin. Studies have shown the mangiferin is readily absorbed through both the dermis and epidermis. Mangiferin is known to inhibit activity of collagenase which is a collagen inhibitor. Essentially mangiferin can increase production of collagen in the skin.
Then we have kokum butter. Kokum butter is a weird one which I chose primarily for it's texture. Kokum butter on its own has a fairly hard and crumbly texture with a higher melting point. I thought this would be great to balance out the softer texture of the other two butters and the two oils. After further research I found out that kokum butter is high in the antioxidant Garcinol which is known to be anti-caner, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidative. These three qualities make it a superior choice for skincare as our skin is under constant attack from environmental pollutants.
Onto our oils we have jojoba seed "oil". It gets the name "oil" because of its texture and similarities to oil but it is actually made up of 98% wax esters. In studies it has been found that jojoba oil when used topically is effective at relieving the symptoms of psoriasis. While jojoba oil feels like an oil, its highly resistant to oxidation at high temperatures which makes it a safe but lightweight product to use topically.
Finally, last but not least we have camellia (tea) seed oil. This oil is know as the "olive oil of the east" as it's composition of fatty-acids is very similar to that of olive oil. While it is high in mono-unsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) , it has very minimal PUFAs which increase oxidative stress on the skin. It is very hard to come by skincare that does not have PUFAs while still having the exceptional absorbability of a lightweight oil, and that is just what camellia seed oil is. This oil is also known to increase the absorbability of other constituents when applied in conjunction with one another which is ideal when you know all of the goodness that goes into this magical product.
Well, that's all folks. If you stuck around THIS long, your a real one! You get to know the secret, why the skincare angels are with us.
When I started this whole journey with Schoon... I had not a single clue about skincare aside from the basics of acids and antioxidants. Each of these ingredients was picked based on very simple criteria and each ingredient turned out to be the BEST ingredient I could have chosen. The criteria at the beginning was 1:do I like it? 2: Does it work for me? I knew if I had those two answers then it had to be something worth sharing! Now here we are.
If you have been looking for a sign to switch up your skincare routine, take a ride on the natural side... Try The Butter. You won't regret it.
